Haiku for You

                      I am your best friend,
                   Now, always, and especially
                     When you are eating.

                              ♥

                        I lie belly-up
                 In the sunshine, happier than
                       You ever will be.

Tibetan Mastiff Sells for $1.5 million

They call me Dong…Hong Dong.

11 months old and 185 lbs.

The Tibetan Mastiff has traditionally been used as a guard dog in China but now will become the guarded.  No running around the neighbourhood for this puppy. It’s out to stud!  According to the breeder Lu Liang, the new owner will be able to recoup some of his money by charging a stud fee of US$15,000.  Mr Lu:

“The buyer told me he thought he was a good investment. As a male dog, he can be hired out to other breeders for as much as 100, 000 yuan a shot. He could recoup his money in just a couple of years,”

The man who purchased the dog is a multi-millionaire coal baron who wishes to remain anonymous.

Somewhere, Chairman Mao is rolling over.

h/t to Sassy.

Study of Kleberg

A portrait of artist Jamie Wyeth’s dog Kleberg recently sold at Christie’s Auction House for five times the pre-sale estimate. The new unidentified owner was able to purchase this master piece for an amazing $218,500!* The portrait of Wyeth’s yellow Lab was done in gouache, watercolour and india ink. If you think that the circle around the eye is familiar, well, Wyeth was a fan of the “Little Rascal” and painted the mark on his dog as a joke.

*most Lab portraits are priceless. 🙂

 Pay…or the dog gets it!

Your dog tag fee, that is…

The law, dating back to 1904, gives the Swiss village of Reconvilier (population 2,245) the right to have a dog killed if the owner has not paid the annual fee of $50.  Local official Pierre-Alain Nemitz:

… the move is part of an effort to reclaim hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid taxes.

Monsieur Nemitz has reportedly been receiving death threats since news of his plan got out.

For the record the town has 280 dogs.  280 dogs x $50 = $14,000/year in taxes.

Cleric issues fatwa against pet dogs

Thinking of opening a pet shop in Tehran?  Fuggedaboutit!

The Grand Ayatollah in Iran has decreed dogs are “unclean” and should not be kept as pets — a move aimed at discouraging western-style dog ownership in the Islamic state, a newspaper reported Saturday.

The laws will be enforced, no doubt, by the Committee for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice.

“Bring your dog to Mosque day”   My guess?…not going to happen.
