According to a recent AAA study, of the 80% of dog owners who drive with their dog in the car, only 17% have the dog restrained! Think about it… A fast stop from only 30 mph with an 80 lb. unrestrained dog will exert 2,400 lbs of pressure! OUCH!
Here in Quebec, the law says that all dogs must be restrained– either in a crate, or with a seat belt. Since our car is a smallish 4-door hatchback, so we have opted for the seat belt. The dog quickly figures out that seat belt = car outing and the seat belt in a non-issue.
Of course, there will still be people who drive with their dog on their lap or in the back of their pick up truck.
