NY TOY SHOW – Citing a complete lack of imagination in their product development department, Mattel has introduced Puppy Tweets. The people at Mattel, having run out of ideas for really cool toys and looking to enter the pet market, decided that they needed to tap into the social media craze. This “toy” consists of a tag that attaches to your dogs’ collar, which then sends a signal to the USB that you have attached to your computer. When sound or motion is sensed, a Twitter comment is generated. The key word here is “generated”. These are “canned tweets”. Anybody remember Chatty Cathy? AAAHHHHH!!!! STOP!!!! From the LATimes:
Sean McGowan, a toy analyst at Needham & Co., said Mattel was right to incorporate the Internet into its toys. But he said today’s tech-minded consumers would probably expect more.
“It reminds me of other gimmicky novelty items that seem great at first, but it’s possible that it’ll get old quickly,” he said.
Good analysis Sean!
